Vocabulary plays an essential role in the development of pupils' speaking, understanding, reading and writing skills. Research tells us that many children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, enter school with a limited vocabulary which, in turn, often leads to low levels of attainment. It is therefore imperative that we devote time to the specific teaching of vocabulary skills.

This course will review what current research tells us about the scale of the problem and how it can be addressed. Approaches to the explicit teaching of vocabulary will be considered. Delegates will be presented with a range of practical, and fun, ideas for them to use in the classroom from EYFS to Y6. Links with spelling, grammar and inference skills will also be explored.
